Isa 43:10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me

Strengthened With Might By His Spirit

Eph 3:16  That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

The strength of the Lord's people is none other than the strength of the Holy Spirit in the inward man.

Right at the very center of the being, deeper than thought or reason...

Deeper than emotion or feeling...

Deeper than all that which comprises the more outward man ...

Which, under given circumstances, may prove weak and incapable of standing up to the situation.

In the variations of our soul life...

The changes of our moods, our ideas, our attitudes, our feelings, our minds...

Deeper down there is that strength which does not let us go.

That is the true nature of spirituality.

It is not the tremendously forceful conviction of our intellects or the mighty power of our wills.

When these cannot stand up to conditions of intense spiritual antagonism, opposition or perplexity...

There is that more inward thing, right in the inward man, which is of God...the Holy Spirit:

Strengthened with might by His Spirit into the inward man.

Test that out and the result is that when the mind is bewildered by the perplexity of a situation...

And the arguments are all in the direction that a mistake has been made...

A wrong course has been taken...

Everything is false...

When all the feelings are churned up, disturbed, anxious, fearful...

Or when there are no feelings at all, they are simply petrified by the position...

When circumstances are all arguing in the opposite direction of that which we, in the purest moments of our fellowship with God determined upon.

The world around us and very closely around us...

Even within the sphere of our own natural life, our own soul life is an inexplicable mystery.

Then spirituality is proved by that inward strength which abides...

That standing when you cannot go forward...

That holding when you can do nothing...

That remaining when all the forces are seeking to sweep you off your feet.

That represents a measure of spirituality.

That is the true nature of the child of God.

The opposite is to be carried away by argument, reasoning, appearance, circumstance, and all such things.

That proves a lack of true spirituality.

In a sentence, true spirituality is not to live on the outside...

It is to live with God right down deep in the inner part of your own being, where He, the Spirit, is.

The Enemy Frustrated

Neither did Sennacherib molest the city. He had boasted loudly, but he could not carry out his threats.

The LORD is able to stop the enemies of His people in the very act.

When the lion has the lamb between his jaws, the great Shepherd of the sheep can rob him of his prey.

Our extremity only provides an opportunity for a grander display of divine power and wisdom.

In the case before us, the terrible foe did not put in an appearance before the city which he thirsted to destroy.

No annoying arrow could he shoot over the walls...

And no besieging engines could he put to work to batter down the castles...

And no banks could he cast up to shut in the inhabitants.

Perhaps in our case also the LORD will prevent our adversaries from doing us the least harm.

Certainly He can alter their intentions or render their designs so abortive that they will gladly forego them.

Let us trust in the LORD and keep His way, and He will take care of us.

Yea, He will fill us with wondering praise as we see the perfection of His deliverance.

Let us not fear the enemy when he actually comes, and then let us trust in the LORD.

Why, Then, Are We So Bewitched With Vanities?

Jer 16:20  Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods?

One great besetting sin of ancient Israel was idolatry...

And we who are the spiritual Israel are vexed with a tendency to the same folly!

We no longer bow down to sticks and stones...

But Mammon still intrudes his golden calf...

And the shrines of pride are not forsaken.

SELF in various forms, struggles to subdue the chosen ones under its dominion...

And the flesh sets up its altars wherever it can find space for them.

Children
are often the cause of much sin in believers...

And the Lord is grieved when He sees us doting upon them above measure.

They may live to be as great a curse to us as Absalom was to David...

Or they will be taken from us to leave our homes desolate.

If Christians desire to grow thorns to stuff their sleepless pillows-...let them dote on their children!

It is truly said that "they are not gods," for the objects of our foolish devotion are very doubtful blessings...

The solace which they yield us now is dangerous...

And the help which they can give us in the hour of trouble is little indeed.

Why, Then, Are We So Bewitched With Vanities?

We pity the poor heathen who adore a god of stone...and yet worship a god of gold!

The principle, the sin, the folly is the same in either case...

Only that in our case the crime is more aggravated because we have more light...

And then still sin in the face of it.

The heathen bows to a false deity...but he has never known the true God.

We commit two evils, inasmuch as we forsake the living God and turn unto idols.

May the Lord purge us all from this grievous iniquity.

1John 5:21  Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

The dearest idol I have known...

Whatever that idol be...

Help me to tear it from Thy throne...

And worship Only Thee!

There Is One Stable Rock Amidst The Billows Of The Sea Of Life!

Mat 28:20  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

It is well that there is One who is ever the same, and who is ever with us.

It is well that there is one stable rock amidst the billows of the sea of life.

O my soul, do not set your affections upon rusting, moth-eaten, decaying treasures...

But set your heart upon Him who abides forever faithful to you.

Do not build your house upon the moving quicksands of a deceitful world...

But found your hopes upon this rock, which, amid descending rain and roaring floods, shall stand immovably secure!

My soul, I charge you...lay up your treasure in the only secure cabinet...

Store your jewels where you can never lose them.

Put your all in Christ; set all your affections on His person...

All your hope in His merit...

All your trust in His efficacious blood...

All your joy in His presence...

And so you may laugh at loss and defy difficulties.

Remember that all the flowers in the world's garden wither and die...

And the day is coming when nothing will be left but the black, cold earth.

Death's black extinguisher must soon put out your candle.

Oh! how sweet to have sunlight when the candle is gone!

The dark flood must soon roll between you and all you have!

So wed your heart to Him who will never leave you.

Trust yourself with Him who will go with you through the black and surging current of death's stream, and who will land you safely on the celestial shore, and make you sit with Him in heavenly places forever!

Go, sorrowing son of affliction-tell your secret troubles to the Friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Trust all your concerns with Him who never can be taken from you, who will never leave you, and who will never let you leave Him, even "Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever."

"I am with you always," is enough for my soul to live upon...though all others forsake me!

Be Strong In The LORD

Eph 6:10  Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

The Lord does not put us in glass houses to grow us, to be His trees...

The Lord does not protect us from the storms, the adversities...

He exposes us to the bitter winds and the scorching suns of adversity and trial.

The Lord is working in us that which is according to His own Nature...

Eternity, the enduring, the everlasting God...

That which will not be easily or hardly carried away.

He is putting substance in you.

Oh, today we fear that the appeal to become Christians is so often in terms of having an easy or a good time...

Being happy and enjoying yourself...

Well, thank God for ALL divine joy, but this is true to the House, to the City, that the first thing the Lord is working toward and seeking to work into His people is that substantial, steadfast, enduring faithfulness that is according to His own nature.

Substantial! Oh for substantial Christians that don’t need coddling and nursing and running after all the time; being pandered to to get them to go on or stand up.

Men and women like cedars of Lebanon; like the hewn stones, weighty, accountable, and responsible to carry weight...

And all that is meant by strength.

I can only remind you again of what a large place that has in the Word of God...

Be strong, be strong in the Lord in the strength of His might...

Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

Think again.

Want to understand why the winds are allowed to blow so fiercely...the storms?

To get us away from that natural, easy-going-ness or cheapness, lightness, frivolousness and to make us people of weight.

Strength through testing, through adversity...

Strength to endure throughout all ages.

There is much which is going to be carried away in the last great testing...

And if, therefore, trial and adversity is the only way to deepen us...

To put caliber into us...

I suppose we must expect more of it as the time shortens.

No Need To Stint

The book of Proverbs is also a book of promises.

Promises ought to be proverbs among the people of God.

This is a very remarkable one.

We are accustomed to think of our good things as in reversion...

But here we are told that we shall have them in possession.

Not all the malice and cunning of our enemies can work our destruction...

They shall fall into the pit which they have digged.

Our inheritance is so entailed upon us that we shall not be kept out of it...

Nor so turned out of the way as to miss it.

But what have we now?

We have a quiet conscience through the precious blood of Jesus.

We have the love of God set upon us beyond all change.

We have power with God in prayer in all time of need.

We have the providence of God to watch over us...

The angels of God to minister to us...

And, above all, the Spirit of God to dwell in us.

In fact, all things are ours.

Whether things present or things to come: all are yours.

Jesus is ours.

Yea, the divine Trinity in unity is ours.

Hallelujah.

Let us not pine and whine and stint and slave, since we have good things in possession.

Let us live on our God and rejoice in Him all the day.

Help us, 0 Holy Ghost!

Faith Is Given To Guard Life In Everything; Not From Everything

Eph 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

But if faith be a protecting shield, what then of the apostle's own experience?

So far from being defended from life's ills, he knew them all in an abounding measure.

He was not protected from cold or heat or hunger, nor from shipwreck, nor from the hand of robbers (2Co 11:1-33).

He was not protected from bodily infirmity, for he suffered from his lacerating thorn (2Co 12:1-21).

Everything that makes life bitter was mingled in the cup of the apostle, and yet he dares to speak of faith's protection.

I think there are many who have still to learn that faith was never intended for exemption.

Faith is not given to guard the life from anything; it is given to guard the life in everything.

It empowers one to bear, and to bear cheerfully, what otherwise would break the heart and darken the loving ordering of God.

To pass through the very worst that life can bring, undismayed in soul, and unembittered;

To tread the darkest mile and sing in it; never to lose heart, or hope, or love;

That is what faith achieved for the apostle and can achieve for everyone of us, and that is the shielding power of faith.

So was it with our blessed Lord. When He came here, He was offered no exemption.

He was a man of sorrows, and He suffered, and He was tempted in all points like as we are.

Yet to the end, in a faith that never faltered, He was loving, tranquil, and forgiving and under the cross spoke about His peace.

You Have Been Long A-Gathering Rust!

Psalm 39:9  I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it.

Oh! but my afflictions are greater than other men's afflictions are!

Oh! there is no affliction like my affliction! How can I not murmur?

It may be that your sins are greater than other men's sins.

If you have sinned against...more light, more love, more mercies, more promises, than others...then it is no wonder if your afflictions are greater than others!

If this is your case, then you have more cause to be mute than to murmur!

It may be that the Lord sees that it is very needful that your afflictions should be greater than others.

It may be that your heart is harder and stouter than other men's hearts...

Or prouder than other men's hearts...

Or more impure than other men's hearts...

Or more carnal than other men's hearts...

Or more selfish and worldly than other men's hearts...

Or more deceitful and hypocritical than other men's hearts...

Or more cold and careless than other men's hearts...

Or more formal and lukewarm than other men's hearts.

Now, if this is your case, certainly God sees it very necessary, for the breaking of your hard heart...

And the humbling of your proud heart...

And the cleansing of your foul heart...

And the spiritualizing of your carnal heart, etc...

That your afflictions should be greater than others...

And therefore do not murmur!

Where the disease is strong, the remedy must be strong or else the cure will never be wrought!

God is a wise physician, and He would never give strong medicine if a weaker one could effect the cure!

The more rusty the NAIL is, the oftener we put it into the fire to purify it; and  the more crooked it is, the more blows and the harder blows we give to straighten it.

You have been long a-gathering rust! Therefore, if God deal thus with you, you have no cause to complain.

All The Trees Of Earth Are Marked For The Woodman's Ax!

How frail is humanity!

How short is life, how full of trouble!

Job 14:1  Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

Job 14:2  He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

It may be of great service to us to remember this mournful fact...

For it may help us to hold earthly things with a loose hand.

There is nothing very pleasant in the recollection that we are not above the shafts of adversity...

But it may humble us and prevent our boasting, My mountain stands firm - I shall never be moved.

It may keep us from taking too deep root in this earthly soil, from which we are so soon to be transplanted into the Heavenly garden.

Let us recollect the frail tenure upon which we hold our temporal mercies.

If we would remember that all the trees of earth are marked for the woodman's ax, we would not be so ready to build our nests in them.

We would love others...but we would love with the love which expects death, and which reckons upon separations.

Our dear relations are but loaned to us, and the hour when we must return them to the Lender's hand may be even at the door.

The like is certainly true of our worldly goods, Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone...

Pro 23:5  Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

Our health is equally precarious.

We are frail flowers of the field and must not reckon upon blooming forever.

There is a time appointed for weakness and sickness, when we shall have to glorify God by suffering and not by earnest activity.

There is no single point in which we can hope to escape from the sharp arrows of affliction.

Out of our few days there is not one secure from sorrow.

Man's life is a cask full of bitter wine; he who looks for joy in it, would sooner find honey in an ocean of brine!

Beloved reader, do not set your affections upon things of earth...

But seek those things which are above...

For here the moth devours, and the thief breaks through...

But there all joys are perpetual and eternal.

The path of trouble is the way Home.

Lord, make this thought a soft pillow for many a weary head!

Meeting The Lions!

The Bible recounts some interesting stories of lions.

They are interesting, not simply because they are stories of animals, but because there are things in connection with them from which we may draw some very striking lessons.

We all remember the story of Daniel...how he was cast into the den of lions, and how during the long watches of the night he sat there in their den unharmed.

What was expected to be the tragedy of his life proved to be his most glorious victory.

The expected triumph of his enemies was turned into their utter defeat and Daniel, stronger and more courageous than ever, came forth to continue his service to God.

Samson too had an experience with a lion. As he was going along the road one day he met a lion, and it attacked him.

He had no weapons...yet he met it courageously.

We are told that "The Spirit of the LORD came upon him in power so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat."

Some time later he was passing that way and found that a swarm of bees had entered the dried carcass of the lion and made their abode there, and he took of the honey and went on his way.

In the thirteenth chapter of 1 Kings we find another lion story.

Here a prophet sent of God went to Samaria and prophesied as God had commanded him, and according to the commandment he started back on his way to Judea.

God had told him not to eat or drink there, but to go back immediately by a different way from that by which he came.

He started to obey, but sat down to rest by the wayside.

While he was here, another prophet came and persuaded him to go back and dine with him.

Then, as he went upon his way, a lion met him and slew him.

The lions of these stories may be likened to our trials.

We meet trials every now and then in life, and some of them seem very much like lions.

They seem very threatening and very dangerous.

Sometimes we try to run away from a trial, but as surely as we do, we meet another in the pathway in which we go.

We are certain to have trials. The important thing is that we meet them properly.

Some people imagine that if they live as they should...that they will not have trials.

But trials often come, when it is no fault of ours.

Daniel was not thrown into the lions' den because he had not lived right or because he had been unfaithful in something.

No, it was his faithfulness that resulted in his meeting the lions.

It will be that way in our lives.

If we are true and loyal to God, that very loyalty is sure to bring us trials sometimes.

Daniel had his choice in the matter.

He could have been disloyal and escaped the lions...but he chose rather to be loyal and take the full consequences, whatever they might be.

God wants you and me to dare to be Daniels too.

He does not want us to swerve an inch from the truth in order to evade any sort of trial.

If we are true, and as a result of that trueness a great trial like being thrown into a den of lions comes upon us, and every earthly hope seems shut off, and there is no help from anywhere...then what shall we do?

Despair?

Ah, no!

God will send his angel and shut the lion's mouth for us, just as he did for Daniel. Dare to be true.

God will stand by you even in the most trying and desperate hour.

It was not a test of his standing true, that brought Samson face to face with the lion.

He met the beast just by accident.

He got into the trouble unwittingly.

He had no expectation of it whatever...but the first thing he knew, he was face to face with it.

That is just the way it happens with us sometimes...we get into a trial without any seeming reason for it; we are not expecting anything of the kind.

If the prophet in Samaria had gone in the way that God commanded him...then he would not have met the lion that slew him.

It was his disobedience that caused the trouble.

Sometimes when we are in trials, we realize that it is our own fault that we are tried.

Sometimes we may be disobedient, sometimes we may be careless, sometimes it may be this or that...but whatever it is, we realize that it is our own fault.

That makes the trial harder to bear.

But however trials come, whatever is their cause...we must meet them.

We have no choice in the matter.

The important thing is to meet them right.

Daniel knew that he had done right and pleased God; and, furthermore, he met his trial with a calm peace and full assurance that God would take care of him, and God did take care of him, and he came through the trial.

He was peaceful through the trial and triumphant after it, because God was his helper.

Someone has said that our trials make or mar us. This is true.

Either we come out of them stronger than we went in or we come out of them weaker.

We have either joy or sorrow from them.

We should meet our trials as Samson met the lion.

Face them boldly.

Do not run or shrink.

If you seem to have no adequate weapon to use against them, trust in God and meet them boldly anyway.

That is the way Samson did, and do you remember what happened?

Why, after a while he got honey out of the carcass.

Do you want honey out of your trials?

You would rather have that than bitterness.

Well, you may have the honey if you will face the trial and overcome it.

Conquer in the name of Christ.

Do not whimper or whine.

Do not lament or murmur.

Do not fear or tremble.

Face your trials boldly, and the Spirit of the Lord will come mightily upon you as it did upon Samson, and you will conquer.

And then, ah, it is then that the sweetness will come...after you have mastered the trial, in the days that follow, sweetness will come, and you will bless God that he ever permitted you to be so severely tried.

Conflict must always precede victory.

The lion must be killed before the bees can build the honeycomb in the carcass.

So face your trials boldly and overcome them.

Then you may taste the sweets of victory.

This is the only way, and you are not too weak to take this way.

God has promised that he will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able to bear.

If you will believe it and do your part...then God will do his, and you will triumph.

One King, One LORD

Zec 14:9  And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

Blessed prospect!

This is no dream of an enthusiast but the declaration of the infallible Word.

Jehovah shall be known among all people, and His gracious sway shall be acknowledged by every tribe of man.

Today, it is far from being so.

Where do any bow before the great King?

How much there is of rebellion!

What lords many and gods many there are on the earth!

Even among professed Christians what diversities of ideas there are about Him and His gospel!

One day there shall be one King, one Jehovah, and one name for the living God.

O LORD, hasten it!

We daily cry, "Thy kingdom come."

We will not discuss the question as to when this shall be lest we lose the comfort of the certainty that it shall be.

So surely as the Holy Ghost spake by His prophets, so surely shall the whole earth be filled with the glory of the LORD.

Jesus did not die in vain.

The Spirit of God worketh not in vain.

The Father's eternal purposes shall not be frustrated...

Here, where Satan triumphed, Jesus shall be crowned, and the LORD God Omnipotent shall reign.

Let us go our way to our daily work and warfare made strong in faith.

Prayer, Thanksgiving, Praise

No care but all prayer.

No anxiety but much joyful communion with God.

Carry your desires to the LORD of your life, the guardian of your soul.

Go to Him with two portions of prayer and one of fragrant praise.

Do not pray doubtfully but thankfully.

Consider that you have your petitions, and therefore thank God for His grace.

He is giving you grace; give Him thanks, Hide nothing.

Allow no want to lie rankling in your bosom; "make known your requests."

Run not to man.

Go only to your God, the Father of Jesus, who loves you in Him.

This shall bring you God's own peace.

You shall not be able to understand the peace which you shall enjoy.

It will enfold you in its infinite embrace.

Heart and mind through Christ Jesus shall be steeped in a sea of rest.

Come life or death, poverty, pain, slander, you shall dwell in Jesus above every rolling wind or darkening cloud.

Will you not obey this dear command?

Yes, LORD, I do believe thee; but, I beseech thee, help mine unbelief.

Fear To Fear

Whenever fear comes in and makes us falter, we are in danger of falling into sin.

Conceit is to be dreaded, but so is cowardice.

Dare to be a Daniel.

Our great Captain should be served by brave soldiers.

What a reason for bravery is here!

God is with those who are with Him.

God will never be away when the hour of struggle comes.

Do they threaten you?

Who are you that you should be afraid of a man that shall die?

Will you lose your situation?

Your God whom you serve will find bread and water for His servants.

Can you not trust Him?

Do they pour ridicule upon you?

Will this break your bones or your heart?

Bear it for Christ's sake, and even rejoice because of it.

God is with the true, the just, the holy, to deliver them; and He will deliver you.

Remember how Daniel came out of the lions' den...

And the three holy children out of the furnace.

Yours is not so desperate a case as theirs; but if it were, the LORD would bear you through and make you more than a conqueror.

Fear to fear. Be afraid to be afraid.

Your worst enemy is within your own bosom.

Get to your knees and cry for help, and then rise up saying, "I will trust, and not be afraid."

Not Left To Perish

Psa 16:10  For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

This word has it proper fulfillment in the LORD Jesus; but it applies also, with a variation, to all who are in Him.

Our soul shall not be left in the separate state, and our body, though it see corruption, shall rise again.

The general meaning, rather than the specific application, is that to which we would call our readers' thoughts at this particular time.

We may descend in spirit very low till we seem to be plunged in the abyss of hell; but we shall not be left there.

We may appear to be at death's door in heart, and soul, and consciousness; but we cannot remain there.

Our inward death as to joy and hope may proceed very far...

But it cannot run on to its full consequences, so as to reach the utter corruption of black despair...

We may go very low, but not lower than the LORD permits...

We may stay in the lowest dungeon of doubt for a while, but we shall not perish there.

The star of hope is still in the sky when the night is blackest.

The LORD will not forget us and hand us over to the enemy.

Let us rest in hope...

We have to deal with One whose mercy endureth forever.

Surely, out of death, and darkness, and despair we shall yet arise to life, light, and liberty.

~Charles Spurgeon~
