Isa 43:10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me

Three Realms Of Deception

There is the realm of the ungodly, there is the realm of the religious and there is the realm of the spiritual.

In every one of these realms the Deceiver works projecting his deceptions, but he adapts his deceptions to suit the realm.

We touch lightly upon the first and the second in order to come to the third more specifically.

1. The Ungodly: The deceiving work among the ungodly, for “the whole world lieth in the Wicked One”, and “the god of this age hath blinded the minds of them that believe not”, they are in the “kingdom of darkness”, they are utterly deceived though they know it not.

So utterly deceived that this letter to the Corinthians in its earlier passages tells us that in its very wisdom, at the very height of its wisdom, it slew the Lord of Glory, it killed the Prince of Life, so blind was it.

Saul of Tarsus was an excellent specimen of the wisdom of this world in setting his hand against the Lord, and the Lord’s own, to hound them to death, and when the light came and he was undeceived, how completely he saw the blindness in which he had been;

But the ungodly are even more deceived than that. Many of them before they close their earthly course wake up to the fact that they have been deceived, and you find in the end of their life so frequently they realize that they have been out full stretch in quest for something to make life complete, to make it full, to satisfy themselves...

And now, well, in some cases disaster has overtaken them, calamity has befallen them and all that they set their hearts upon has been lost, and they have nothing left of time or ability or strength or any kind of resource to begin again, and life has gone and now laughs back at them.

Everything was put out to reach an end which has eluded them, which they have missed, and the only thing that they can honestly say is, that they have been deceived.

On the other hand many reach their goal, accumulate wealth and possessions, position, influence, power and still heart-hungry they end their lives.

Well, we have had many instances of late. We have read of one who took his own life, not because things had gone wrong, he had accumulated his wealth, he turned his hand upon himself because he had nothing more to live for, and if that is not deception what is?

Oh, yes, beloved, the ungodly are in the grip of a mighty deception and in the end the Deceiver is going to laugh at them whether they succeed or whether they fail in what they set their hands to in this life.

In the end they are going to discover that the thing for which they were given a being has been missed and life has been just one delusion.

That is the meaning of the commission given to the Apostle Paul. He had had his eyes opened and the Lord said to him “Thou shalt stand before kings and rulers, and nations to whom I send thee to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God.”

Turning from the power of Satan unto God, from darkness to light, is the result of having eyes opened; thus becoming disillusioned, undeluded by having eyes opened.

They are blind and the blindness is the work of one who has got them in his grip.

Kings, rulers and people, yes, many of them repudiating any such suggestion that they are blinded or deluded, but the Lord knows “to open their eyes”.

That is what we meant when we said that the Gospel in a sense is peculiarly for delivering men from deception, universally. So much for the ungodly.

2. The Religious: A word about the religious, for the same thing holds good here adapted by the Deceiver to the realm in which he is working, the type of people with whom he is dealing, the religious.

Yes, religiously deceived, to put it in another way, deceived by their very religiousness, and that is a strong and a mighty delusion.

There is power in that delusion that seems so often to defy every kind of attempt to deal with it.

Deceived by religiousness. What more can be expected than the recognition of the fact of God and the giving to God of reverence, acknowledgment, and recognition:

Of taking active interest in things which relate to God, attending religious services, and being very busy in religious activities and interests, and finding your chief interest in religious things and the religious realm?

What more can be expected? What is the matter with that? Be patient, bear with me if I say with very great emphasis: that may be one colossal delusion.

So often that very thing obscures one fundamental thing, a true and living relationship with God. “Ye must be born again”, and religion very often obscures that issue.

Oh, religion is no argument for salvation. Religion can be found in the darkest places of the earth.

Universally there is religion; depraved and very low in many places, but universally there is the consciousness of standing in relationship to some supreme object of worship, demanding worship; and then men's minds or imaginations get to work to give some kind of expression to that consciousness, of that supreme object of worship...

And the imagination produces that sometimes out of a tree, a stone, or in the heavenly bodies; somehow it is expressed, but it is the thing that is there, behind all the forms of expression which is universal.

All the highly civilized forms of that brought into the realm of Christendom are only the same thing developed. It does not say that Christendom’s more intelligent, civilized, educated interpretation of God, even though it gets its ideas from the Bible, is salvation.

It may be a mighty delusion and very often is.

I have asked people if they have been born again, and they have said “It is not necessary; I have been confirmed.”

Such may be an extreme case, and I do not take it up for criticism but by way of illustration. You may take on religion because you have got a religious temperament and that does not mean that you are saved.

The devil may be holding you just as firmly, tightly, in the grip of an unsaved state by your religion as he does the worldly by his pleasures.

He does not mind how he holds you. By the most aesthetic religious activities, self-denials and such like, so long as he can keep you from the main thing.

Now one could pursue that for a long time, there is so much more, but it is merely indicated. It is the deception that we are getting at.

There is a vast difference, beloved, between vital union with God in Jesus Christ and religious formalism, and as we said at the outset, there is a very great need for a ministry by which deception, even amongst religious people, shall be shattered and broken and the fact of an essential, vital union with God by new birth shall be brought home to religious people.

Along that line the enemy is destroying the whole testimony of the Church by packing it full of active, energetic, unconverted people.

That is where he is sapping the strength of the Testimony of God.

3. The Spiritual: Now we come to the third, the spiritual people, and we are now dealing with the truly born anew children of God, the spiritual people.

The enemy will adapt his work of deception to this realm as cleverly and even more cleverly and ingeniously than to any other realm, but he does not give up the children of God as incapable of being deceived, for it is here that we find delusion and deception in its finest, its most acute forms.

It is here that so often dear children of God have been utterly led off into error by something which bore all the semblance of absolute Gospel truth.

It is in this realm, amongst the Lord’s own children, that the deceptions of today are most rampant and active.

What is the mark, the peculiar mark of the Deceiver’s deceiving work for the Lord’s own people? It is the counterfeit of all that is of God. The counterfeit system which includes anything that is of God.

Now if you will get down with your Bible you will be able to trace that counterfeit system as it moves into every connection with God.

First of all you will see that there is a counterfeiting of the very Godhead. That is saying a terrific thing, but it is true.

A counterfeiting of the very Godhead, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The counterfeiting of the first Person in the Trinity, God.

What does the Scripture have to say: “The god of this age hath blinded...” The god of this age, and Satan is seen in the Word of God to set himself up all the way through as the supreme object of worship to draw away from God Himself.

You have not to go very far into the Bible to see that. It is implied in his very first act. “Hath God said?”

Well, “I am a greater authority than He is.” That is what is implied in that. “You listen to me,” and so by subtle insinuation he captured God’s place of reverence, of fear, of acknowledgment, in the heart of man and in so doing became man’s god, you see, getting worship.

His subtle insinuation by which he did it was, “God knows if you do that, you will be as God knowing good and evil, and God forbidding you to do that is simply robbing you of something which, being yours, would make your life fuller and larger and greater; and so God after all is not favorable to you, and is keeping something back.

He is making life smaller and narrower than it need be, and if you will only do as I tell you, you will have a life higher than that.

Yes - become a Christian, give your life to God, and life will become a narrow, mean thing, and you will have to give up this and that.

That is always the insinuation of the enemy, he never lets you know what you are going to gain by going on with God, and the deception works, that instead of gaining you lose, when you give heed to the enemy. “The god of this age hath blinded.”

When Israel came out of Egypt, the supreme object of their coming out was not the coming into the land or the wilderness, but that they should come out to the Lord, belong to the Lord, be His people.

Let my son go; that was the word: coming out to, belonging to, the Lord.

They had not been in the wilderness very long before Moses went up into the mountain for a period with the Lord, and the enemy broke into the company. What was God saying to Moses in the mount?

Let them bring me gold and silver and brass and precious stones and fine linen, and let them make me a sanctuary.

The enemy broke in at that time and said in effect: “Not if I can help it,” and he provoked the people to bring their gold for a molten image, taking the gold away from God.

What is gold? That which is representative and typical of God Himself - the Divine nature.

This thing runs all the way through. Same principle back of things: the god of this age is seeking to get the worship due to God, and he simulates the first Person of the Trinity, imitates, counterfeits along the line of religion to get worship.

Then the second Person of the Trinity (you realize that we cannot stay to thoroughly exhaust each one of these) is the Lord Jesus, God Incarnate in the Son.

We read: “Many shall come in my name saying I am Christ and shall deceive many.” Antichrist is the simulation of God Incarnate. Taking the place of god amongst men in human form to capture the worship of men’s hearts. Sitting in the temple of God giving out that he is God.

Christs many, “there shall come false Christs.” The Deceiver is out to counterfeit Christ, simulate Him even to the point of incarnation, the devil incarnate, Antichrist. As far as possible he takes all the semblance of Christ.

The Living God And The Battle For Life

God has one thing in view finally, and that is life. He intended from the beginning that that which issued from Himself, represented Himself, bore His mark, should be that which lives with His own life.

Satan has determined just the opposite, that that which comes from him bears his mark, and that is death, not because he wants to have death to gratify himself, but he wants God to be deprived of that upon which His heart is set.

Satan's heart is a heart of malicious spite against God.

Remember that! He has, deep in his very being, this spite against God.

God has done something to Satan which has turned his heart with the bitterest malice and deep abysmal hatred for God and spite against God, and he wants to deprive God of His end - that is, a universe marked by God's own life.

And so anything whatever that has the mark of God upon it or is in the way of having that mark, that seal, is the objective of Satan's bitterest hatred.

It becomes a sharer with God in the spite of Satan. Remember that!

Wherever there is divine life, then that becomes part and lot with God in the animosity of the devil.

The one thing is to bring that life to an end, to spoil that life, to bring in death; where life is, to surround that and try and engulf it in death again.

There is only one way in which he can do it and that is to corrupt, but, strangely enough, it is to get the mind or the heart of the believer accepting corruption.

My conviction is this, that today Satan is standing at nothing in the wholesale slaughter on this earth in order to get at one corporate man, that man child of Revelation 12, that company with whom the heavenly and eternal interests of God and the testimony of Jesus are bound up, and this is it - life or death?

And the pressure to corrupt will be intense, the pressure to destroy faith in the living God will be terrible, the pressure to move us away from our ground of confidence in God will be unspeakably great in order that that testimony of the living God, that life over which Satan has no power, shall be brought, so far as the instrument is concerned, into a neutralized state.

God must have an instrument. He has done this thing again and again. The whole generation of babes of a certain age destroyed in Israel in order to get one - that Babe of Bethlehem.

It is this thing that is my conviction. I am not thinking in physical terms now - our destruction physically included in this that is going on today.

That is a mere incident; whether we live or whether we die is not the question just now.

I hope that we have got over that, that we can sing from our hearts, "The fear of death has gone forever" in so far as the physical side is concerned.

That is not the point. It is our faith, beloved; if we lose faith, we have lost our life.

If we lose our confidence in the living God, we are engulfed in that spiritual death; that is, we are put out of our functioning place for God, with God.

The true sons of God by faith in Jesus Christ, those who share God's life through regeneration in virtue of the Blood of Jesus which has dealt with the sin question, those who have become sharers with God in His life through His righteousness, are the objective of Satan today.

It seems a terrible thing, but then what is going on on the earth after all may only be limited to Europe.

And we say, all of us, is it not a terrible thing to think that one man in a continent will bring millions to death just to get his own end?

But take the whole world, and not only the whole world, the whole course of time, and Satan has repeated it again and again to get his own end.

It does not matter to him if he throws all the nations into the fire of destruction if he can get his end.

What is his end? It is that elect instrument, God's elect, with which all the purposes of God are bound up, to get at that, to get at the faith of that, not to destroy it physically, but to get at its faith.

The Way Of Adversity

What are you expecting, what are you waiting for, what are you concerned about, what are you pleading and praying for?

If you are praying for full and final deliverance from adversity and suffering and difficulty and all that sort of thing, let me tell you your prayer will never be answered.

Forms of suffering may change, but in some form or another we are going on to the end in a way of adversity.

Satan is not going to become our friend while we are friends of Jesus Christ.

The kingdom of Satan is not going to rally to our support while we belong to the kingdom which is opposed to his.

Let us settle that. It will get us free, perhaps, from this entanglement.

And I Will Bring The Third Part Through The Fire

Zec 13:9  And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

It is a mercy to be in the furnace, and it is a mercy to be brought through it.

The LORD'S promise to the third part is, that he will bring them through the fire.

They must therefore, according to his own word, be put into it, and yet not left in it.

It is "through the fire"--right through it from beginning to end, whether it be a long and slow one or short and fierce one.

The LORD knows exactly what we can bear, and it is not always the hottest fire which produces the most softening effects.

Some metals indeed are so stubborn, and the dross is so deeply engrained into them, that they seem to require a hotter fire than others.

But after the law has done its work, and the dross and tin have been purged away, the LORD does not usually bring again so hot a furnace.

It is rather one of trial, temptation, sickness, family affliction, straits in providence, persecution, deep and daily discoveries of the body of sin and death, the hidings of the LORD'S face, and denials of his presence which seem to make up that trial which tries every man's faith of what sort it is.

By these trials and exercises there is a gradual weaning from the world, a humility, meekness, and brokenness of spirit before the LORD, a greater simplicity and godly sincerity, more    willing obedience to the precepts of the gospel, and a greater desire to know the will of GOD and do it.

O that these fruits of the Spirit might abound in us and all the saints and servants of GOD!

Stand Still And See The Salvation Of The LORD!

Exo 14:13  And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

These words contain GOD'S command to the believer when he is reduced to great straits and brought into extraordinary difficulties.

He cannot retreat; he cannot go forward; he is shut up on the right hand and on the left; what is he now to do?

The Master’s word to him is, “Stand still.”

It will be well for him if at such times he listens only to his Master’s word, for other and evil advisers come with their suggestions.

Despair whispers, “Lie down and die; give it all up.”

But GOD would have us put on a cheerful courage, and even in our worst times, rejoice in his love and faithfulness.

Cowardice says, “Retreat; go back to the worldling’s way of action; you cannot play the Christian’s part, it is too difficult. Relinquish your principles.”

But, however much Satan may urge this course upon you, you cannot follow it if you are a child of GOD.

His divine fiat has bid thee go from strength to strength, and so thou shalt, and neither death nor hell shall turn thee from thy course.

What, if for a while thou art called to stand still, yet this is but to renew thy strength for some greater advance in due time.

Precipitancy cries, “do something. Stir yourself; to stand still and wait, is sheer idleness.”

We must be doing something at once - we must do it so we think...instead of looking to the LORD, who will not only do something but will do everything.

Presumption boasts, “If the sea be before you, march into it and expect a miracle.”

But Faith listens neither to Presumption, nor to Despair, nor to Cowardice, nor to Precipitancy, but it hears GOD say, “Stand still,” and immovable as a rock it stands.

Stand still;...keep the posture of an upright man, ready for action, expecting further orders, cheerfully and patiently awaiting the directing voice;

And it will not be long ere GOD shall say to you, as distinctly as Moses said it to the people of Israel, “Go forward.”

To An Angel's Eye, It Must Be The Ugliest Thing On Earth!

Pro 16:18  Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Chrysostom has aptly called pride "the mother of Hell"...for Hell with all its horrors is its hideous offspring!

Had there been no treacherous pride, there would have been no bottomless pit!

Perdition was prepared for the Devil and his angels - and pride prepared the Devil and his angels for perdition!

We need fear no language we can possibly use being too strong to denounce pride, for as Aristotle says, "Pride comprehends all vice!"

Is drunkenness to be condemned with unmeasured severity? Then let pride be equally so, for it is nothing less than a spiritual drunkenness.

Pride flies as wine to the brain, and produces the same result.

No wretched drunkard reeling along the road is a more pitiable or disgusting sight, than the man who is intoxicated into idiocy with the alcohol of his own accursed pride!

May the most unsparing language be employed in the denunciation of the sin of idolatry? Then let it be equally strong in the condemnation of pride, for they are one in essence.

The proud man is simply one who bends the knee and worships a more hateful idol than can ever be found in the whole catalogue of heathendom; and its name is "Self!"

God loathes pride, for "everyone that is proud is an abomination to the Lord." Proverbs 16:5. To an angel's eye, it must be the ugliest thing on earth!

And the saint, often deploring it, hates it with a perfect hatred.

But although universally condemned - it is too generally harbored.

It is easy work to find a thousand excuses for the particular species of pride we possess, which is almost always, according to our own estimate, "only proper pride."

It is the minister's imperative duty to cry out against particular sins, and lay the axe at the root of special iniquities.

I want this evening, by GOD'S help, to strike a blow at the deadly root of pride.

I have no doubt many things I may say will be considered too severe. I cannot help it if they are.

The language of my text is strong and unvarnished enough; the truth it contains is put in the most uncomplimentary mode, and I would be a traitor were I to attempt to smooth it down.

My work is to declare that "pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."

Valiant For Truth

Dan 11:32  And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.

The LORD is a man of war, Jehovah is his name." Those who enlist under His banner shall have a Commander who will train them for the conflict and give them both vigor and valor.

The times of which Daniel wrote were of the very worst kind, and then it was promised that the people of GOD would come out in their best colors: they would be strong and stout to confront the powerful adversary.

Oh, that we may know our GOD: His power, His faithfulness, His immutable love, and so may be ready to risk everything in His behalf.

He is One whose character excites our enthusiasm and makes us willing to live and to die for Him.

Oh, that we may know our GOD by familiar fellowship with Him; for then we shall become like Him and shall be prepared to stand up for truth and righteousness.

He who comes forth fresh from beholding the face of GOD will never fear the face of man.

If we dwell with Him, we shall catch the heroic spirit, and to us a world of enemies will be but as the drop of a bucket.

A countless array of men, or even of devils, will seem as little to us as the nations are to GOD, and He counts them only as grasshoppers.

Oh, to be valiant for truth in this day of falsehood.

Suppose Ye That I Am Come To Give Peace On Earth?

Luke 12:49  I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?

Luke 12:51  Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:

If you and I are going to be men and women of the Spirit, we are not going to have an easy time.

Hell will see to that.

At once the clash arises and it is true that the more the Holy Spirit is able to have His way in us and to lead us into all the will of GOD, the more we find this opposition, this antagonism.

And it not only comes between us and the world, it sometimes comes in the circle of the LORD'S own people.

It is inevitable provocation. You wonder why, sometimes.

As you read the New Testament you wonder, What is the matter with these people?

Why should they be so upset and so annoyed?

And why should it be so spontaneous, this thing? And persistent; so unreasonable?" but there it is. There is the fact. It is inevitable.

You see, this thing that the LORD came to do and is doing, will not allow for any neutrality.

It is going to be one thing or the other. It is going to be for or against.

The eyes of flame (here the fire comes in again) the eyes of flame will not allow lukewarmness or anything that is of the Laodicean character.

The fire is a positive element always, and it will create positive situations.

If everything is all just nice and quiet, no disturbance, no trouble and no antagonism and opposition, you have reason to question whether the Holy Spirit is doing much, because He does aim at such a positiveness, which is a very, very costly thing.

It is either with the LORD, or not with the LORD, and there is nothing between.

It is going to come out sooner or later and be precipitated.

Now, the LORD says that is what He came to do.

This is not an accident, a chance or things having gone wrong or miscarried.

This is exactly what He came to do - to scatter fire on the earth and these are the inevitable effects of the fire. They are going to work out.

In God, Not Out Of Trouble

Jer 45:5  And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest.

A promise given for hard places, and a promise of safety and life in the midst of tremendous pressure, a life "for a prey."

It may well adjust itself to our own times, which are growing harder as we near the end of the age, and the Tribulation times.

What is the meaning of "a life for a prey"?

It means a life snatched out of the jaws of the destroyer, as David snatched the lamb from the lion.

It means not removal from the noise of the battle and the presence of our foes; but it means a table in the midst of our enemies...

A shelter from the storm, a fortress amid the foe, a life preserved in the face of continual pressure:

Paul's healing when pressed out of measure so that he despaired of life; Paul's Divine help when the thorn remained, but the power of Christ rested upon him and the grace of Christ was sufficient.

Lord, give me my life for a prey, and in the hardest places help me today to be victorious.

~Days of Heaven upon Earth~

We often pray to be delivered from calamities; we even trust that we shall be;

But we do not pray to be made what we should be, in the very presence of the calamities;

To live amid them, as long as they last, in the consciousness that we are, held and sheltered by the Lord, and can therefore remain in the midst of them, so long as they continue, without any hurt.

For forty days and nights, the Saviour was kept in the presence of Satan in the wilderness, and that, under circumstances of special trial, His human nature being weakened by want of food and rest.

The furnace was heated seven times more than it was wont to be heated, but the three Hebrew children were kept a season amid its flames as calm and composed in the presence of the tyrant's last appliances of torture, as they were in the presence of himself before their time of deliverance came.

And the livelong night did Daniel sit among the lions, and when he was taken up out of the den, "no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God."

They dwelt in the presence of the enemy, because they dwelt in the presence of God.

Faithful and Useful

Psa 101:6  Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.

If David spoke thus, we may be sure that the Son of David will be of the same mind.

Jesus looks out for faithful men, and He fixes His eyes upon them, to observe them, to bring them forward, to encourage them, and to reward them.

Let no true-hearted man think that he is overlooked; the King Himself has His eye upon him.

There are two results of this royal notice. First we read, "That they may dwell with me."

Jesus brings the faithful into His house, He sets them in His palace, He makes them His companions, He delights in their society.

We must be true to our LORD, and He will then manifest Himself to us.

When our faithfulness costs us most, it will be best rewarded; the more furiously men reject, the more joyfully will our LORD receive us.

Next, he says of the sincere man, "He shall serve me." Jesus will use for His own glory those who scorn the tricks of policy and are faithful to Himself, His Word, and His cross.

These shall be in His royal retinue, the honored servants of His Majesty.

Communion and usefulness are the wages of faithfulness.

LORD make me faithful that I may dwell with Thee and serve Thee.

The Word, Necessary Food

Mat 4:4  But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

If God so willed it we could live without bread, even as Jesus did for forty days; but we could not live without His Word.

By that Word we were created, and by it alone can we be kept in being, for he sustaineth all things by the Word of His power.

Bread is a second cause; the LORD Himself is the first source of our sustenance.

He can work without the second cause as well as with it; and we must not tie Him down to one mode of operation.

Let us not be too eager after the visible, but let us look to the invisible God.

We have heard believers say that in deep poverty, when bread ran short, their appetites became short, too;

And to others, when common supplies failed, the LORD has sent in unexpected help.

But we must have the Word of the LORD. With this alone we can withstand the devil.

Take this from us, and our enemy will have us in his power, for we shall soon faint.

Our souls need food, and there is none for them outside of the Word of the LORD.

All the books and all the preachers in the world cannot furnish us a single meal:

It is only the Word from the mouth of God that can fill the mouth of a believer.

LORD, evermore give us this bread. We prize it above royal dainties.

The Sin Of The Rich Man Was Selfishness

There was nothing sinful in his being rich--Abraham himself has been a wealthy man.

It is not hinted that the rich man of the story had made his money in unlawful ways.

He is not charged with oppression of the poor, nor with enriching himself by others' ruin.

Had you asked his boon-companions what they thought of him, they would have called him the finest fellow in town.

It was neglecting Lazarus that was his sin. His crime was the unrelieved beggar at his gate.

And he could not plead that he was ignorant of Lazarus, for he recognized him at once in Abraham's bosom.

It was not want of knowledge, then, but want of thought that was the innermost secret of his tragedy.

He was so engrossed in his own life of pleasure, that his heart was dulled to the suffering at his door;

And every day he lived he grew more selfish till at last he went to his own place.

Let the children learn how needful it is to begin doing kindly deeds when they are young.

We grow so accustomed to misery by and by, that our hearts turn callous before we are aware.

It is a priceless blessing when the sympathies of childhood are turned into the channel of activity.

Caught in their freshness, and expressed in deeds, they form those habits of help and brotherly kindness that were utterly wanting in this rich man's heart.

Dealing With The Past

Mat 9:28  And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.

GOD deals with impossibilities. It is never too late for Him to do so, when the impossible is brought to Him, in full faith, by the one in whose life and circumstances the impossible must be accomplished if GOD is to be glorified.

If in our own life there have been rebellion, unbelief, sin, and disaster, it is never too late for GOD to deal triumphantly with these tragic facts if brought to Him in full surrender and trust.

It has often been said, and with truth, that Christianity is the only religion that can deal with man's past.

GOD can "restore the years that the locust hath eaten" (Joel 2:25); and He will do this when we put the whole situation and ourselves unreservedly and believingly into His hands.

Not because of what we are but because of what He is.

GOD forgives and heals and restores. He is "the GOD of all grace." Let us praise Him and trust Him.

Nothing is too hard for Jesus No man can work like Him. We have a GOD who delights in impossibilities.

Nothing too hard for Him.

Their Sound Went Into All The Earth.

Now that's something for the whole world and that's something for you, there's a message for you.

Let us begin to face this fact and it is an exceedingly solemn fact... nothing profound about it, but it's an exceedingly solemn fact that the trumpet is sounding, that is, that GOD is speaking.

GOD is in the world making known His mind for you, for all men.

GOD is not silent. GOD has not stopped speaking. He is speaking very loudly today and very widely.

Some of us are wondering whether GOD is not speaking as He is today for the last time.

We believe that the LORD Jesus is coming back. We believe that His coming is drawing near.

We believe that the end of this dispensation can almost be seen.

We in this country are not so alive, sensitive to this as they are in some places.

I was saying (I think it was today, the days seem so long, I'm not sure if it was today or yesterday...) what I discovered on the other side of America only a week or two ago, is that there, right up and down that west side of the United States, a large number of houses on a day like this are up for sale and to let.

And living amongst many of them and seeing all these boards up, I asked my friend with whom I was staying, "Why?

There is such shortage, why here in these salubrious parts are people wanting to leave their houses?"

Oh, he said, You know everybody over here are living as on the edge of a volcano.

They're scared for their lives of these atomic bombs that they believe are coming at any time and they want to get right away from populated areas, they think that they're safer out in the desert.

Anywhere, but here. And just living like that... and you feel the tension and you know that it is so and everybody speaks about it.

I don't know that it is not justified to some measure, at any rate they know over there all about it.

You see, I went out into the city of Los Angeles in a car one day and I found that my eyes were beginning to get so painful, I could hardly keep them open, and my throat becoming so dry that I couldn't understand it.

It created difficulty for speaking. And I explained this to my friend and he said, "Well, you know they exploded a bomb yesterday, it's blowing it up here."

Just a little taste, well I'm not a scaremonger, I'm not trying to scare you into anything.

But we think we see that the end is not far off and men's hearts are failing them for fear.

You find it out there, and Scripture says it, men's hearts failing them for fear of the things which are coming upon the earth.

That Scripture is verily being fulfilled and it is said to be a sign of the last times. Well, maybe. We leave it that it might be.

Supposing that time is getting short toward the end of this dispensation, people are getting nervy about it.

Supposing...May it not be that this great sovereign thing of GOD because it is sovereign, we can't see any other explanation of what is happening.

In this great campaign [?] for instance, and the main figure in this campaign there in Glasgow was here in London last year and himself said, There's nothing to account for it but GOD, and I'm no preacher.

And everybody who listens knows that.

If you're looking for a wonderful sermon well, you don't find it there, if you're looking for a great discourse on theology you don't find it there.

It's from the very simplest. And you wonder, you wonder how that can have the effect that it has.

Certainly it's not beating the intellect, and really it's not beating the emotions for everybody says no, this is not a great emotional thing.

GOD is sovereignly doing something surely.

And how widely flung this is, we've only heard this evening of it being talked about there up in Nairobi, ungodly people talking about it, they've heard the reports of what's going on.

Is GOD sounding the trumpet for the last time?

Is He sovereignly letting it be known that redemption is in Christ Jesus for all men?

I put it in the form of a question, but if the question is permissible, allowable, it's a very solemn thing isn't it?

You, dear friends, if you're not in Christ, are hearing the trumpet sound, are, yes verily tonight, hearing it announced that GOD has provided redemption for you in His Son Jesus Christ.

You can never before GOD in time or eternity say, "I never knew, I never heard, I never had a chance!"

Well, GOD has equally, sovereignly perhaps, brought you to hear as He has also sovereignly ordained that it is to be said. That's something to think about.

It's a very, very serious thing to have heard the Gospel of the grace of GOD, to have been told of this wonderful redemption.

We put our hearts into it this evening when we sound it. Believe it, oh sinner, believe it!

Receive the glad message, it's true, it's true, it's true. GOD is calling you.

GOD is calling you to Himself just as those trumpets called the people to Moses, to gather together unto him.

And a greater than Moses is here, the LORD Jesus by this sounding forth of the message tonight is calling you to Himself.

Jesus is tenderly, but loudly and definitely, calling today, and the word is, "Today if you will hear His voice, harden not your heart...".

It is a call of love, a call of mercy, a call of entreaty, but it's a call of warning.
